RuggedCom will supply wireline devices from the RuggedSwitch and RuggedBackbone families of products, along with RuggedCom's network management software, RuggedNMS, and RuggedSolutions' CrossBow security software.
The gigabit capacity of the Ethernet network will allow BED to add future services like video, VOIP or other SCADA related data.
The company also landed another deal this month with Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division (MLGW), United States’ largest three-service municipal utility, to provide a high-speed communications network to support remote monitoring systems and future smart grid applications.
They also required devices with encryption and other cyber security options to protect the network and end devices as well as for regulatory reasons.
Smart meters may disadvantage poor, elderly
The UK’s £11.7bn plan to install smart meters to measure gas and electricity use in every home may disadvantage poor and elderly people, a panel of lawmakers said.
The Public Accounts Committee is urging the government to set clear rules for an industry that’s dominated by six companies, including EON AG and Centrica, according to a Businessweek report.
“Smart meters will allow energy companies to disconnect customers without entering the property,” Margaret Hodge, chairwoman of the multiparty panel, said in a statement. Officials must “ensure that there are proper safeguards to protect the vulnerable, elderly and those on low incomes to ensure they benefit from the programme.”

He cited that researchers at Munster University of Applied Sciences have found that smart-meter monitoring systems can even detect which television programmes are being watched, by matching power consumption with the signal for each television channel.
"So we are using applied cryptography to guard consumers' consumption habits. Utility providers know how much energy a group of users is consuming overall, but not exactly where or by whom that energy was consumed,” he said.
Regulators hold opt out workshop
US Regulators held a public workshop on the issue of allowing consumers to opt out of NV Energy’s “smart” meters on the outside of homes and businesses.
Public Utilities Commission workshop in Carson City was videoconferenced to Las Vegas, where NV Energy has already installed more than 800,000 smart meters.
According to an RGJ news report, Northern Nevada began installing meters for 300,000 electricity customers and modules in 150,000 existing natural gas meters in Reno-Sparks with completion expected by year’s end.
The PUC’s go-ahead two years ago for the $303m programme included no opt-out provisions.
But, according to the news report, after opponents voiced concerns, NV Energy is proposing four options that would come with a cost for recouping lost savings while smart meters have no costs attached.
