Pike forecasts that for a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle that would ordinarily cost $20,000, the optimal price point of a comparable PEV would be $23,750.
Toshiba to target large US cities and projects
The Japanese giant makes some moves with the Swiss smart metering giant it bought for $2.3 billion last year.
Toshiba, armed with its acquisition of Swiss smart metering giant Landis+Gyr, is turning its eyes to the challenge of cracking the U.S. smart grid market, including the smart home energy market. But look to cities and other large-scale entities for its first moves in linking smart grid and building energy efficiency.
Toshiba has plans to expand its US market share in the smart grid and smart home energy markets through its ownership of Landis+Gyr, which now holds top place amongst North American smart meter deployments.
According to a Reuters report, the Japanese company, expects its 'small community business' initiative, which links residential and commercial buildings with energy efficiency and smart grid services, to generate $11.67bn by 2015, with some $1.82bn of that to come from the US market.
Toshiba has also said that it expects to enter the US smart home energy market by the end of 2012 and generate $130m by 2016.

Utilities are likely to invest in water meters and related technology as new pipes are installed across the US and the globe, according to Pike Research.
According to a new report, the global installed base of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) smart meters with two-way communication capabilities will reach 29.9 million by 2017, up from 10.3 million in 2011.
Pike Research found that additional water meter shipments will be driven by more developing nations to conserve scarce water supplies and developed markets located in in desert regions, such as the Middle East or Southwestern US. Regulatory requirements and the need to reduce high levels of non-revenue water are also market drivers, the report indicated.
India finalising $94.4m in smart grid pilot projects
India’s Power Ministry is likely to finalise about eight smart grid technologies-related projects on pilot basis worth nearly Rs 500 Crore (~$94.4M) in two months, according to an Economic Times report .
Fourteen state utilities are expected to submit plans for pilot projects related to smart grid technologies this month, a Power Ministry official said.
"Once the proposals are received, we are likely to select seven or eight projects on a pilot basis. Each project is expected to cost about Rs 50 to 60 Crore (~$9.4 to11.3M)," the official told PTI.
The official pointed out that around 50 per cent of the total cost of a pilot project would be borne by the Ministry while the remaining would come from the utilities. Amid ambitious capacity addition plans to sustain good economic growth, the power sector would be focusing more on smart grid technologies, said the news report.
